Capaz Law Firm Represents Victims of Car Crashes Caused by Distracted Drivers
Life can change in a split second when a driver chooses to take his eyes off the road to read or send a text, to check an app, or to get social media updates. In June 2014, a mother took her two daughters (ages 11 months and 4 years) out for a bike ride near their home in rural Minnesota. At that same time, a driver decided to make a loan payment on his phone. The driver looked down at his phone and then heard a thud. He never even saw the mother and her children. Fortunately, the two children survived; however, the distracted driver killed their mother.
It is unfortunate that these tragic, yet preventable, accidents are becoming common news headlines. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 8 people are killed and more than 1,000 are injured every day in car crashes that involve reported distracted driving. While it’s an under-reported issue, the National Safety Council estimates that about 1/4 of all car crashes can be attributed to distracted driving connected with use a cell phone.
Distracted driving does not just include talking on a cell phone, texting and eating. These days, drivers are also on social media apps such as FaceBook, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Google Maps, Spotify, YouTube, and now “Pokemon Go.” According to a recent survey of 2,500 high school-age teenagers across the U.S., nearly 70% of teens use apps while driving. In another survey of 2,400 drivers of all ages, 74% indicated they use FaceBook while driving. Additionally, 37% of the drivers indicated that they use Twitter while driving, while 35% use YouTube and 33% use Instagram.
It seems that most people do not fully comprehend just how dangerous distracted driving can be. Texting and driving makes a car crash 23 times more likely to happen. Simply stated—no text is that important.
