Florida has the highest rate of bicycling deaths of any state in the nation, according to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Bicyclists are killed on U.S. roads at a rate double that of car and vehicle occupants, even though bicycle travel accounts for approximately one percent of trips across all other modes of transportation. The statistics show 0.57 per 100,000 people, more than double the national rate of 0.23 per 100,000.

Bicycle Deaths

Though there are laws in Florida to protect bicyclists from cars, trucks and commercial vehicles, those laws are not always followed. Other times bike accidents are caused by unsafe roads or equipment problems. Bicycle accidents are also often caused by a negligent or inattentive driver who: fails to yield at an intersection; fails to stop at a red light or stop sign; turns directly in front of a bicyclist; drives in a lane designated for a bicyclist; talking or texting on a cell phone; driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol; and failing to drive cautiously.
