Pedestrian Auto Accidents in Tampa

The Tampa Bay Times recently reported that 2015 was the deadliest year for pedestrian accidents in Hillsborough County. According to the Florida Department of Transportation, the lives of 51 pedestrians were lost. This is a 50% increase from the number of pedestrian fatalities in 2014. While Hillsborough County may be deadliest within the area, Smart Growth America reported that, based upon an analysis of five years worth of data on pedestrian fatalities, Tampa Bay (Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater) ranked as the second most dangerous area to walk in the United States.

Pedestrian Fatalities

City and County officials are unsure why the roads remain so dangerous in the Tampa Bay area, especially in light of the time and money invested into pedestrian safety projects for new crosswalks, expanded sidewalks and initiatives to slow traffic. The fact remains that there are many different causes of pedestrian accidents. Sometimes the pedestrian may be responsible for the accident. However, pedestrian accidents are typically the result of someone else’s negligence. Liability might lie with a vehicle driver, property owner, or someone or some business who is responsible for maintaining a safe sidewalk and/or roadway. Similar to automobile accidents, traffic crashes involving innocent pedestrians can be avoided if drivers of cars, trucks or buses do not act negligently or carelessly. Speeding, distracted driving, inexperience, drunk driving, and failure to stop and/or yield are very common causes of fatal pedestrian accidents. Unfortunately, if struck by a negligent driver, a pedestrian is more likely to suffer catastrophic injuries or death.

Pedestrian Safety

Here are some guidelines to help prevent pedestrian accidents:

  • Look left, right, and left for traffic.
  • Walk on the sidewalk.
  • Use designated crosswalks.
  • Avoid high-risk intersections.
  • Make eye contact with drivers.
  • Wear bright or reflective clothing.
  • Do not text and walk.
  • Obey traffic signals.
  • Drivers: Pay Attention!
